What is the last book I read?

The last book I read was the Shack. It was recommended by a friend of mine that thought it was a great novel. It inspired her to think more about the direction of her life. I admit I was disappointed. I suppose if you feel lost when you begin to read it, you may find it inspiring. I was also disappointed by the ending. I thought it was a cop out because it was too A typical.

  1. I recently read Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. It's a very thoughtful coming of age story about 2 friends in China in the 1960s Maoist regime, their love for English books and for the little seamstress of the title. It's soon to be a movie and should look good on the big screen.

  2. After many years of my best friend bugging me, I'm finally reading Lady Audley's Secret. Sadly, said best friend has talked about the book so much over the years, I already knew the eponymous secret before I started. But still, it's interesting.

  3. The last book I read was entitled "Weird Stuff" by Richard Tulloch. I was reading it for a teacher so I could or could not recommend it to her for her class. The book was ok--nothing that great. Boys might enjoy it more than girls.

I also read "Ashes of Roses" by Mary Jane Auch. This book was also a project for a teacher looking for novels about immigration. The story is about a girl working at the Triangle Shirt Waist factory when the fire broke out. It's very factual and the story is captivating. If you enjoy historical fiction and especially immigration stories, you will love this book.

  4. The last fiction book I read was "Loving Frank" by Nancy Horan for last month's book discussion group at Jackson branch. I was surprised at how much I disagreed with the reviews of this work, which portrayed the protaganist as being likeable. Aside from my disconnection from this character, it was interesting to read about the life of Frank Lloyd, although I am always cautious to seperate fictional works with what I read in biographies and other nonfiction sources.

  5. I just finished reading Notes From the Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick. It's a young adult book that is written in humorous prose about a serious issue- drunk driving and the possible consequences of it. The cover is unappealing, and since I judge books by their cover (sshhh don't tell anyone!) I almost didn't read it, but I am glad I did!

  6. I can't believe I can't remember the last book I read! But I am currently reading "House of Cards-A Tale of Hubris and Wretched Excess on Wall Street" by William D. Cohan. It's an account of the collapse of Bear Stearns. In one week they went from having $18 billion dollars in cash to bankrupt!
(Dee, I am posting here because my son has not ok'd my comment on his blog. Either he has not visited it recently, or, as he uses it for work and career related purposes, he may not want to show my innocuous comment.)

  7. Hmmm, lets see, do bedtime stories count? I last read Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney. It's a regular bedtime story among others. I just haven't had time to do mature book reading yet. These post have been helpful in my next selection.

  10. The last book I read was Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. This was the April title for my book discussion group. I really enjoyed this story of a 92 year old man reflecting back on his life in the circus.

  11. The last book that I read was Life Sucks by Jessica Abel. It's a graphic novel about Dave, a "vegetarian" (doesn't drink from humans) vampire who was created by his boss to work the night shift at a convenience store. Dave, of course, falls in love with one of the goth girls that frequents the club across the street. Next thing he knows, he's trying to save her from bad boy, surfer, vampire dude, Wes - who she's fallen for. All in all, Life Sucks is a wonderful cross between Clerks (the movie by Kevin Smith) and all the vampire love stories that we're all drowning in right now. Even those not that fond of the Twilight series (like myself) should give this quirky graphic novel a try. Highly recommended.

  12. The last one I finished was 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I read it because a couple of teen librarians recommended it. Very good book; suspensful and pretty well written although the subject is a bit depressing.

  13. I just finished reading The Patron Saint of Butterflies by Cecilia Galante. It is the story of Agnes and Honey, two girls who have grown up in seclusion as part of religious commune. While Agnes is a believer and feels a connection to the community, Honey does not. When Agnes's grandmother makes an unexpected visit to the commune, tragedy strikes when Agnes’s little brother is seriously injured and Emmanuel, the commune's leader, refuses to send him to a hospital, Nana Pete takes the three children and escapes the commune. It raised hard questions about faith, family, and identity without being the least bit preachy. I looked forward reading another chapter although the end left a few questions unanswered.
    A four star read.

  15. The last book I read was 74 Seaside Drive by Debbie Macomber. Right now I'm starting The Shack. Not far enough along to review it.

  16. I just finished The Survivor's Club. It provided interesting factual accounts on people who have survived difficult incidents/situations in their lives. It examines why they survived--when they shouldn't have-- and great insight/info on developing a "survivor's attitude". A great read.

  17. The last book I read was Richard Scarry's Cars, Trucks, and Things That Go. Can you tell I have a four year old? But I am in the process of reading the teen novel Secret Society Girl: An Ivy League Novel by Diana Peterfreund. This is the first book in the series. So far it's very good especially if you like the Skull and Bones kind of thing. It will definately be something I can get my teens into.

  18. The last book I read (book on CD while traveling home) was Iris Johansen's book Quicksand. The book's protagonist Eve is trying to find the body of her little girl, it involves some paranormal psychic type things in it that do not appeal to me; but I was trying this author as she had been recommended to me.
